Overview
A practical one-day course for clinicians who need to develop, practise, or refresh venepuncture and cannulation skills. The course covers core knowledge, equipment selection, technique, and common troubleshooting. Learners practise in a supportive environment and refine their approach through expert-led teaching and supervised skills development.
Audience
This course is suitable for healthcare professionals and other relevant staff working in hospitals, community services, primary care, and dental settings who undertake, or are training to undertake, venepuncture or cannulation.
Learning objectives
By the end of this course the aim is that delegates will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of relevant anatomy and physiology.
- Explain the legal and professional considerations relevant to venepuncture and cannulation.
- Use appropriate equipment safely to obtain venous blood samples and insert intravenous cannulae.
- Recognise and manage common complications and special considerations in practice.
Assessment
Continuous supportive assessment and practical assessment of competence. Learners are expected to demonstrate safe technique during supervised skills practice, with any workplace sign-off managed through local governance processes where required.
